2021

Lerwick Pony Sale was held on Friday 1st October 2021.

The 62nd annual Lerwick Pony Sale was held on Friday 1st October at the Shetland Rural Centre. Unfortunately, SLMG could not let the PBSA proceed with the annual Pony Sale Show to safeguard their staff from Covid-19, however the sale was allowed to go ahead. There were 65 ponies forward on the day, with numbers up on last year’s entries. An array of sizes and colours were forward to suit a range of buyers, with ponies being very well presented and of a high quality overall.

A sale of the Brindister Stud Book collection took place before the ponies went under the hammer. Top price was for a very rare Shetland Islands Pony Stud Book from 1909 and sold for £1000.

Yet again the online bidding facility proved invaluable with a large percentage being sold online, combined with a full ringside of keen bidders saw prices soar above a lot of sellers’ expectations. The sale was watched worldwide through the online bidding facility. All bar one of the ponies forward were sold, with one being sold to as far afield as America and another to Germany. The PBSA must express thanks to the vendors who provided numerous photographs and videos of the lots in advance of the sale, allowing for the ponies and the sale as a whole to be promoted greatly in the lead up to the day.

Unfortunately, more than half of the ponies due to be shipped South that evening were unable to travel due to adverse weather conditions and the boat having to load earlier than scheduled. All ponies were bedded down at the Marts and looked after well by PBSA and SLMG representatives until they sailed.

The top price of the day was for Midgarth Charlotte, a blue dun miniature filly foal belonging to Carole Forteath, Gulberwick selling for 3400 guineas to a bidder in the room.
