Viking Show 2013
The 2013 Viking Show was held on Sunday 18th August. The show day itself was soggy to say the least with some seasoned competitors saying it was the wettest Viking Show in its 22 year history! The sun did make a welcome (abeit brief) appearance in time for the championship. With just over 240 entries across the three rings the numbers were almost 100 higher than last year so the judges had their work cut out judging some big classes of good quality ponies.
Mr Julian Walters was judging the Standard ponies in Ring 1 and commented on the quality of ponies forward. After much discussion between Mr Walters and Miniature judge, Mrs Di Johnson the best foal award was presented to the Robins Brae stud with their miniature colt foal, Robins Brae Rave
In Ring 2 judge Mrs Di Johnson had a busy day as she carefully judged entries in the miniature ring despite the ever worsening weather. At the end of a very wet and windy day and after much deliberation the Overall Miniature champion was Milday Socks, the moonwalking stallion owned and shown by Mrs Mari Williamson of the Benston stud. Reserve Miniature Champion was awarded to Gunelsta Nettle of the Robins Brae stud.
Mrs Sarah Ross judged the performance classes and was also impressed with the standard of ponies and riders. Rebecca Fraser was awarded the prize Best Young Handler with her pony May Gowan of Hardenley and Kirsty Budge was Driven Champion with HRE Aladdin . In the ridden classes Arianne Fraser riding stallion, Hollydell Hazard was awarded Reserve Ridden Champion while the title of Ridden Champion awarded to the lead rein duo Keiva Robertson and her pony Hollydell Royal Command.
After a long, cold, wet and generally miserable day of showing the competitors spirits were surprisingly undampened as a crowd gather to watch as the three judges came together to deliberate over the championship. In the end it was the three year old colt from Orkney, Hools Rising High leased and exhibited by June Brown that took the title of Supreme Champion. The Reserve Supreme Champion was awarded to a delighted Kevia Robertson and Hollydell Royal Command.
And lastly, a big thank you to all those who gave their time and effort to make the show a good experience for exhibitors and spectators alike. The show secretary, stewards, runners, caterers and all those who set up and tidied up the show park do a fantastic job and their contribution to the show ensures it’s continued success.
