PBSA Youngstock Show 2019

Sunday 10th November saw the eighth Annual Pony Breeders of Shetland Association Youngstock Show take place at the Shetland Marts. There was a great turnout of quality ponies ably judged by Mr Jimmy Wilson from Clackmannanshire. Thankfully the weather was beautiful and clear, if a bit chilly, allowing everyone to make it to the show which was quite fortunate for the time of year.

Ponies, 3 years old and under, came from the length and breadth of Shetland to compete and all of the classes were strongly contested. The overall best foal was the miniature filly Ruffloch Ruby from Rosemary Cross, Burra. Best yearling was the miniature filly Ruffloch Coco also from Rosemary Cross. Best 2 year old was the Standard Colt Clumlie Viceroy from Robin’s Brae Stud Dunrossness, and best 3 year old was the miniature colt Brygarth Isaac from Michael Laurenson, Lerwick. In the overall championship, Brygarth Isaac took the honours of Champion, Best Miniature and best exhibtor bred pony with Hollydell Hesitant taking reserve honours and the trophy for Best Standard Pony.

As always there were young handler classes run in order to encourage and support future Shetland Pony Exhibitors. It was heartening to see an increase in entries which bodes well for the future of Shetland showing. Both classes were very keenly contested with competitors split into two age groups, 9 years + under and 10 – 16 years. Lori Duncan from Lerwick was victorious in the younger age category with Ashley Hunter from Vementry taking honours in the older age group. It was Lori Duncan though who pulled out all the stops to take overall Best Young Handler honours.

Huge thanks must go to all those involved in making the show such a success. In particular our judge Mr Jimmy Wilson and his son Graeme who accompanied him on his trip, our extraordinary Steward Abigail Robertson who kept everything running smoothly and not forgetting the stalwarts that are Helen Thomson and Arianne Fraser for ensuring proceedings were correctly recorded. Not forgetting Shetland Livestock Marketing Group for the use of their fantastic venue, Gloria Beaton for opening her cafe on a Sunday to keep everyone fed and especially all of the exhibitors and spectators who made the show a success. Congratulations to all the prize winners at the Youngstock Show and see you all again next year.
