Viking Shetland Pony Show 2023
Saturday 19th August saw the 32nd annual Viking Shetland Pony Show, with the addition of a Fun Day on Sunday 20th August in memory of the late Helen Thomson. Despite the poor weather forecast on the Saturday there was a good turnout of competitors from across Shetland. We would like to thank our judges who travelled from all over the UK to officiate. Zoe Bell from Northern Ireland judged the standard pony ring along with probationary judge Ann Irvine, Di Johnston from Yorkshire judged the small pony ring and Emma Gibson from Yorkshire judged the performance ring. Competition was fierce with Overall Supreme being awarded to the small pony ring Champion, a home bred 3 year old filly, ‘Breckenlea Samira’ from Amanda Slater, Tresta. Reserve Overall Supreme went to Buxted Military Man ridden by Eilith Gunn from Muckle Roe and owned by the Fraser Family from Whalsay. The show could not have happened without our fabulous stewards, gate stewards and helpers so thanks must go to them. Huge thanks must also go to Mari Williamson and Sheena Anderson for all of their organisation and hard work to make the show run smoothly. Sunday’s weather made for a more enjoyable day with competitors of all ages competing in Top Score, Handy Pony, Agility and Gymkhana Games. Winners in each of the three sections were awarded with Helen Thomson memorial tankards. Freya Polson and Redsand Fanta were winners in the lead rein section, Libby Hunter and Ramnaberg Charlie winners in the novice section and Katie Budge with Clothie Night Echo winners of the open section.
